In a 2011 survey, it was found that there are over 702,000 Hondurans in the US based on a survey taken on the American Community made by the Census Bureau. Over time, that number has definitely increased. Furthermore, according to PEW Research, 60% of the 573,000 Hondurans in the USA are unauthorized.
It is no secret that the Trump administration is anti-illegal immigration. Trump’s immigration policies are all aimed at stopping terrorists from coming into the US via harsh measures including forcibly separating many unauthorized immigrants who are already productive members of US society from their families, homes, and jobs. Recently, the administration has elevated the war against illegal immigration by challenging California’s sanctuary laws and gaining support in the Supreme Court for his Travel Ban which affects seven Muslim countries as well as a large portion of Muslims who are already in the United States.
If you are a Honduran immigrant or if you plan to immigrate to the US from the Honduras, then you should watch out because the Honduras just might be Trump’s next target.
MIAMI — For nearly 20 years, Orlando Lopez has tried to be a model immigrant.
He left his native Honduras after Hurricane Mitch destroyed his family’s farm in 1998 and secured temporary legal status in the USA. He bought a house in South Florida, started a trucking business that employs 10 drivers and made sure he never ran afoul of the law. He pays his federal income tax, corporate taxes and local property taxes.
But now, Lopez could become the latest legal immigrant forced out of the country by the Trump administration. Over the past year, the administration has been ending Temporary Protected Status, a federal program that has allowed more than 435,000 immigrants from 10 countries to legally live and work in the U.S. for decades.
